[ARCHIVED] Hydroponic Farm Ribbon Cutting and Healthy Food Festival

City residents are invited to a ribbon cutting and “healthy food festival” to celebrate the Kimberley Park Hydroponic Farm on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 349 Northwest Crawford Place, Winston-Salem.

The ribbon cutting will be held at 10 a.m. and will be immediately followed by the festival, which will run through 1 p.m.

The festival will include tours of the hydroponic farm, healthy cooking demonstrations and samples, health screenings on the Novant Community Care Cruiser, an urban farmers market and information booths for more than 20 local organizations and businesses, including Boston-Thurmond United, the Latino Community Center, Duke Energy, the SHARE Winston-Salem co-op, Forsyth Technical Community College, H.O.P.E. (Help Our People Eat) and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Food & Nutrition Team.

A kid’s area will include a bounce house, face painting, story times and members of the Police Department’s “Paw Patrol.” There also will be music, food trucks and prizes.

The City Council approved construction of the hydroponic farm as a means of increasing the supply of fresh, locally grown food in an area that has been designated as a food desert. The farm grows leafy green vegetables and herbs, including five kinds of lettuce, collards, spinach, bok choi and basil.

The hydroponic farm was built with $2 million in bonds that voters approved in 2014.
