[ARCHIVED] “Stock the Food Bank with the East Ward” Surpassed Its Goal

The “Stock the Food Bank with the East Ward” food drive collected 8,772 pounds of nonperishable food and $6,283 in cash—the equivalent of 38,726 meals--for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. The drive was held during September, and surpassed its goal of raising the equivalent of 25,000 meals in food and cash donations.

Council Member Annette Scippio said that she was pleased with the results.

“We thank the residents of the East Ward who came out and supported this effort,” Scippio said.

The food drive was open to residents, churches, businesses and anyone who lived, shopped, played or traveled in the East Ward. Scippio said that the effort originated from the recognition that September is Hunger Action Month and that the Food Bank was moving to a new facility and could use some help stocking its shelves. The project was also organized in honor of former Council Member Joycelyn Johnson.
