[ARCHIVED] Youth Advisory Council Attends National League of Cities City Summit

The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will attend the National League of Cities, City Summit with members of the Winston-Salem City Council. The conference will be held in Kansas City, Mo., from Nov. 17 – 19.

The National League of Cities is an advocacy organization made up of city, town and village leaders whose goal is to help their hometowns thrive. The City Summit is an annual conference that brings local leaders from across the country together to share information about the challenges facing America’s cities.

The YAC delegates will participate in workshops that focus on mental health, civil discourse, youth engagement and social entrepreneurship.

The Youth Advisory Council was created by the City Council in 1989 to give high school students an opportunity to become more aware of local government and become involved in local issues by participating in community activities. Youth Advisory Council members also participate in approximately 40 hours of community service and select an annual project to implement.

“It’s important that young people see how the decisions that local governments make affect citizens’ quality of life, and how leaders work together at conferences like this one to create positive change,” said Council Member Annette Scippio, who represents the East Ward.

Scippio worked with local sponsors to raise the money for students to attend the summit. Those sponsors include: Mayor Allen Joines, Front Street Capital, ROAR, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, Grubb Properties, Dale Pinilis, Gray Garrison, Winston Cup Museum and Special Events Center, Stimmel Associates PA, Truliant Foundation, Walter Robbs,  Steve Lineberger, Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem, and Infill Delicate.
