[ARCHIVED] Parts of First & Second Streets Open to Two-Way Traffic

Parts of First and Second streets in downtown Winston-Salem are scheduled to open to two-way traffic after Thanksgiving. First Street will open to two-way traffic from Peters Creek Parkway to Spruce Street. Second Street will be two-way from Peters Creek Parkway to Broad Street.

The changeover will take place on Tuesday night, Nov. 29. Message boards will warn the public about the traffic switch until permanent signs are installed the week after Thanksgiving.

The conversion is part of a $2.8 million makeover that voters approved as part of the 2018 bond referendum. The project also includes new pavement, curb work and signals.

Jeff Fansler, the city’s deputy director of transportation, said that the conversion should slow traffic, make the area more pedestrian-friendly and improve the flow of traffic in and out of downtown.
