Council Member Adams Appointed to NLC Committee

WASHINGTON —  Winston-Salem Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore Denise D. Adams has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2023 human development federal advocacy committee. Adams was elected to a one-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for LNC’s federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities on issues involving social services, children and learning, poverty and income support, employment and workforce development, equal opportunity, education Social Security and seniors, individuals with disabilities, public health care, mental health parity and immigration reform. The appointment was announced by NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Wash.

“As an elected official, it’s important to not only know my own community, but to look around and see how other communities with similar challenges are solving their problems,” Adams said. “I look forward to the insights I’ll gain in this new role and hope to bring some innovative ideas back to Winston-Salem around poverty, workforce development and housing.“

As a member of NLC’s human development committee, Adams will play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities and towns before Congress, with the administration and at home.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are a key tool for gathering insights directly from the communities that our members serve,” said NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Washington. “I am excited to have Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore Adams serve on the human development committee and look forward to working with her to ensure every city, town and village in this nation has the resources they need to thrive.” 

The leadership of this year’s committee will consist of Chair Steve Williams, Mayor of Huntington, WV; Vice Chair Adriana Rocha Garcia, Councilmember, San Antonio, TX; and Vice Chair Doreen Garlid, Councilmember, Tempe, AZ.
