[ARCHIVED] Council Member Barbara Hanes Burke To Hold Gun Violence Community Briefing

Council Member Barbara Hanes Burke will hold a Gun Violence Community Briefing on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 4129 Northhampton Drive in Winston-Salem.

Burke, council member for the Northeast Ward, said that she felt compelled to call people together after the city suffered nine homicides in January.

“The national reach of the gun violence crisis is evidence that no one agency or organization can resolve this alone. Therefore, it was never our belief that the epidemic we face, along with the entire country, would be addressed without continuous collaboration and persistence,” she said. “As we remain steadfast in addressing the ongoing violence afflicting our neighbor and neighborhoods, this community briefing is meant to educate as well as provide updates and resources from the various agencies working and collaborating to address gun violence in our city.”

The meeting will include comments from Mayor Allen Joines, Pro Tempore Denise D. Adams and briefings by Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn; Assistant Police Chiefs Wilson Weaver II, Michael Cardwell and Jose Gomez; Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough; the Winston-Salem Fire Department; Forsyth County Emergency Medical Services; Magistrate Kia Harvey, Forsyth County Magistrate’s Office; Tembila Covington, Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods; Cedric Russell, Russell Funeral Home and other community advocates and partners.
