Katherine Moore, the daughter of Katherine Johnson, a NASA mathematician whose calculations on orbital mechanics ensured astronaut John Glenn’s successful flight into space on Friendship 7 in 1962, will speak at the South Fork Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, as part of a STEM  program that runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Moore will speak about her mother’s accomplishments, as part of a group of Black women who worked at NASA and whose calculations were crucial to the success of the space program. 

Other speakers at the event will include scientists, doctors and other professionals who have benefited from an education in science, technology, engineering and math. The program is designed to encourage young people to pursue careers in the field.
