Police Chief William H. Penn Jr. has created a new community engagement committee open to those who want to partner with the Winston-Salem Police Department in building a safer community. The engagement committee will act as a conduit of information between the committee and the police department, Penn said, but can act only in an advisory capacity.

The Community Engagement Committee will have up to 20 members who must live within the city limits. Members will serve two-year terms. Members must complete an application, pass a background check, attend quarterly meetings and complete training required by the department. Citizens can read more and apply here: cityofws.org/cec. The application deadline is Friday, March 10.

“We want the council to help us create a safer city by building strong, positive and trusting relationships between the community and the Winston-Salem Police Department,” Penn said. “We want the community to not only give us ideas, but hold us accountable.”
