The city has divided the Community Development Department into two new departments—Neighborhood Services, which will focus on code enforcement and neighborhood revitalization, and Housing Development, which will focus on building new affordable housing.

Shantell McClam will serve as the new neighborhood services director. She was most recently head of the Purchasing Department.

Marla Newman will serve as the new director of housing development. She was previously the community development director.

Assistant City Manager Patrice Toney said that the reorganization will allow the city to more sharply focus on neighborhood revitalization and affordable housing, one of the council’s strategic priorities.

“Both of these areas greatly contribute to citizens’ quality of life and their ability to achieve economic mobility and stability,” she said. “This reorganization will allow the city to make these two areas priorities.”
