City of Winston-Salem Prepares for Winter Weather

The city of Winston-Salem is preparing for winter weather with temperatures dropping into the teens.

In the event of rain, black ice could form. Remember to slow down and leave plenty of distance between you and other vehicles.

The city is continuing to work with local agencies to provide emergency shelter to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Families in need of shelter should contact the Coordinated Intake Center line at (336) 721-9327. Single men and women in need of shelter should contact City with Dwellings at 502 N. Broad St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 or by calling (336) 790-9766.

City rec centers are open during normal operating hours for city residents who need a place to warm up. Hours vary from center to center. See the list here.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities encourages customers to take steps to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Make sure you know where your home’s main water supply shut-off valve is located to minimize flooding if a pipe breaks.
  • Insulate water heaters, pipes and faucets, especially in unheated spaces.
  • Disconnect and drain outdoor water hoses.
  • During extreme cold, allow faucets to trickle slowly.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities is unable to assist with plumbing repairs on private property, however it can shut water off at the meter in an emergency. Learn more at CityOfWS.org/2626 or contact CityLink at 311.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department offers these tips when staying warm indoors:

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from other objects.
  • Plug heaters directly into wall outlets.
  • Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip.
