City Observing Black History Month

The city is observing Black History Month in February with the annual Police, Fire and Recreation & Parks departments Black History Month program, as well as special programs at Union Station, Old Town Neighborhood Center and the William C. Sims Sr. Community Center.

We Built This, an exhibit that highlights Black builders and craftspeople in North Carolina, opens at Union Station, 300 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 on Friday, Feb. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. with a program beginning at 2 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by the Historic Resources Commission, the African American Heritage Initiative and Winston-Salem State University.

The exhibit highlights the stories of those who designed some of the state’s most historic sites from Colonial Days to the present. People and sites in Winston-Salem that appear in the exhibit include Lamson Hall at Winston-Salem State University, Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church and internationally known brickmaker, George Black. 

After Feb. 2, the traveling exhibit will move to the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Farmers’ Market, 2532 Farmers Market Way, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105, where it will be open from 6 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: Feb. 10, 17 and 24.

During the month of March, the exhibit moves to the C.G. O’Kelly Library on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. For more information go to: www.CityOfWS.org/HRC.

The city’s Department of Human Relations/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a presenting sponsor for the Black Sacred Music Symposium which will be held on the University of North Carolina School of the Arts campus from Thursday, Feb. 15 to Sunday, Feb. 18. The four-day conference is dedicated to the study and performance of Black sacred music traditions and will include a choral performance on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Gerald Freedman Theatre. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, the Winston-Salem Police and Fire departments will honor select retirees, and the Recreation & Parks Department will showcase entries in its Black History Month exhibits and activities, during a virtual Black History Month Celebration. The event will be posted to the city’s YouTube channel here: https://www.YouTube.com/WinstonSalemCityGov.

The William C. Sims Sr. Community Center, at 1201 Alder St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27127, will host an African American Read-In Day on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The Old Town Neighborhood Center, 4550 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27106, will feature a Black History Month film series on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Films shown include: Feb. 1 – Friday; Feb. 8 – The Great Debaters; Feb. 15 – The Equalizer; Feb. 22 –Barbershop and Feb. 29 – Get Out.
