City transportation officials will hold four drop-in information sessions starting Thursday, Feb. 27, on plans to convert First, Second, Liberty and Main streets downtown to two-way traffic.

Sessions will be held:

  • Thursday, Feb. 27, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., at the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel, Lexington Ballroom, 401 N. Main St., Winston-Salem.
  • Wednesday, March 4, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., at BB&T Ballpark, Flow Club, 951 Ballpark Way, Winston-Salem.
  • Tuesday, March 10, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., in the Stuart Municipal Building, Third Floor Conference Room, 100 E. First St., Winston-Salem.
  • Thursday, March 12, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., in the Stuart Municipal Building, Third Floor Conference Room, 100 E. First St., Winston-Salem.

At each session citizens can learn more about the plans, view maps and ask questions.

The Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership Business 40 Task Force recommended the conversions in order to slow traffic speeds, promote pedestrian use, improve connectivity of the downtown street network and enhance the overall downtown business environment.

A study by an independent traffic engineering firm looked at the recommendations and concluded that they were feasible when taking into account the anticipated volume of traffic in 2040 and the effect that the new exit and entrance ramp configurations for Salem Parkway (formerly Business 40) would have on current downtown traffic.

More information about the conversions is posted at CityofWS.org/2way.
