The city is accepting applications for its Successful Outcomes After Release (SOAR) program through 11:59 p.m. March 25, 2020.

SOAR is a six-month program that provides gainful employment to former offenders while supplementing the city’s existing workforce. Participants work 32 hours a week for $11.25 an hour in routine labor and clerical jobs.

Participants also receive coaching and training in life skills such as goal setting, planning, interpersonal relationships, financial management, communication, job-search techniques and resume writing. Participants who lack a high school diploma receive assistance in getting a GED.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a resident of Winston-Salem, have at least one prior conviction, and must have at least six months’ work experience since the last conviction or have successfully completed a job-training/re-entry program.

Applicants must also pass a drug test, consent to a background check, be registered with selective service (males only), and be able to work 32 hours a week (Monday - Friday).

An application link and more information is posted at CityofWS.org/SOAR. Interested citizens can contact Troy Sneed at 336-306-4320 or email Troy.
