WSTV Digital Media will air Triad Cultural Arts’ virtual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, from 3 to 5 p.m.  The program will include music, dance, crafts demonstrations, a health discussion and more, says Cheryl Harry, the founding director of Triad Cultural Arts, which organizes the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Winston-Salem.

“COVID-19 dictated that our Juneteenth 2020 celebration be held virtually,” Harry said, “and when Triad Cultural Arts selected the theme, ‘A New Season of Freedom,’ little did we know it would be providential” in light of recent events.

Highlights of the program include an interview with the producer of the film “Miss Juneteenth,” a Black Lives Matter tribute featuring mezzo soprano Tichina Vaughn and student poet Leah Hauser, Jazz music and dance with the Genre Band, Gospel music by the Renaissance Choir and a presentation on food history by Sweet Potatoes restaurant.

Drs. Elijah Beaty, Rashad Sullivan and Mary Anne Branch of Wake Forest Baptist Health will discuss health issues, Peggy Moore of Delta Fine Arts will demonstrate quilting and artist Leo Rucker will host a painting demonstration. Also performing are the Greater Vision Dance Co. and Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble.

WSTV Digital Media can be viewed on channel 13 on Spectrum or channel 99 on AT&T Uverse and online through the city website. To watch online go to CityofWS.org and select the clapboard icon under the search box.

Juneteenth celebrates the country’s longest-running observance of the abolition of slavery. It commemorates the emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, after Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas. They were the last slaves to learn of their freedom. Initially celebrated in Texas, where it is now observed as a state holiday, the celebration of Juneteenth has gradually spread.

Sponsors for this year’s Juneteenth Celebration are Food Lion, ABC45/My48, the Winston-Salem Urban League, Innovation Quarter, The Arts Council, Wake Forest Baptist Health, Hanesbrands, Union Baptist Church and the city of Winston-Salem.
