“No Wipes in Pipes” Wins Utility Award

No Wipes in Pipes

The No Wipes in Pipes public education campaign won second place in the 2020 E Source Utility Ad Awards Contest during a virtual event on Sept. 8. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities entered the “Best Safety and Emergency or Outage Communications Campaign” category of the contest after launching No Wipes in Pipes earlier this year. The initiative’s goal is to educate the public about sewer and septic backups caused by so-called flushable wipes.

It doesn’t matter if you are on a municipal wastewater system or have your own septic, said Public Information Officer Gale Ketteler of WSFC Utilities. “Wipes of all kinds, paper towels, sanitary products and even facial tissues contribute to sewage backups if flushed down the toilet. They don’t disintegrate like toilet paper and also cause expensive damage to pumps in the wastewater system,” Ketteler said. “The bottom line is you should only flush the Four Ps: Pee, Poop, Puke & (toilet) Paper.”

The E Source awards recognize creative excellence in utilities throughout North America. More than 500 submissions were reviewed by an independent group of judges. See the winners for 2020 and prior years at esource.com/adcontest-winners/.
