Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 9, on the curb improvements required as part of the conversion of First and Second streets downtown to two-way traffic.

Curb work will begin along the section of First Street from Liberty Street to the Strollway crossing just east of Cherry Street. Lane closures will be in place. Work on the curb improvements will continue in sections moving progressively west to Peters Creek Parkway. In all, the curb work on First Street is expected to take six weeks to two months to complete.

When the curb work on First Street is completed, curb work will begin on Second Street.

In addition to the curb work, the conversion project entails adding traffic and pedestrian signals, milling and repaving both streets and restriping them for two-way traffic.

DOT officials expect that First Street will open to two-way traffic before Second Street because it requires fewer traffic signal modifications. In all, the entire conversion project for both streets is expected to be completed by January 2022. A web page with more information about the project will be posted at CityofWS.org/2Way.
