The city of Winston-Salem is accepting grant applications through Jan. 15 from non-profit organizations for programs that address social justice and anti-poverty initiatives. The City Council recently set aside $1 million for such programs and tasked the Community Investments Review Committee to determine how the money should be allocated.

The committee, which includes citizens representing each ward, has recommended five funding categories, including:

• $200,000 for social justice/anti-poverty initiatives; 
• $150,000 for long-term anti-poverty/social justice strategies;
• $190,000 for heritage preservation and education; and 
• $110,000 for mentorship and neighborhood capacity building.

The committee also recommended allocating $300,000 for broadband internet access, expansion and training as the fifth funding category, to be handled by the city's Information Systems Department.
