The City Council and the Human Relations Commission will honor two city residents as the 2021 recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. Young Dreamers Award at the City Council meeting tonight.

The Young Dreamers Award recognizes two emerging or proven young adult city residents between the ages of 18 and 40 who have made a tangible difference in the lives of those who otherwise might have been overlooked, ignored or disadvantaged.

Honored this year are Frankie Gist, the founder of Hope Dealers Outreach; and Lizbeth Sanchez, a community volunteer and advocate for the Hispanic community in Winston-Salem.

Gist was honored for being an advocate and resource for the marginalized people of Winston-Salem, by hosting peaceful community events that advocate for civil rights and social justice, assisting families of victims killed in gun violence and collaborating with local law enforcement and city government to address policies that unjustly impact people of color.

Sanchez was honored for her volunteer efforts with New Life/Nueva Vida and its mentoring program for at-risk youth, as well as her volunteer work during the pandemic distributing meals and translating for the Hispanic community.

The Human Relations Commission established the Young Dreamers Award in 2009 to encourage young adults to participate in philanthropic, altruistic community involvement that is in the spirit of how Martin Luther King Jr. lived and encouraged others to live.
