The city is again giving city residents the opportunity to voluntarily participate in its survey about city government and the services it provides.

The seven-page survey includes general questions about perceptions of Winston-Salem as a place to live, work and raise children, and in-depth questions about city government, including police and fire protection, utilities, sanitation, recreation and other city services.

Residents who would like to participate can fill out the survey online at CityofWS.org/ResidentSurvey. Citizens without internet access can request that a copy be mailed to them by calling CityLInk 311. Surveys should be completed by March 17.

The survey already has been mailed to about 10,000 households randomly selected to be representative of the city by geographic area and other factors, in order to provide a statistically valid sample.

The surveys completed by voluntary participants will be compiled separately from the surveys mailed to city residents; however, both sets of results will be provided to the mayor and City Council, said Scott Tesh, the city’s director of performance and accountability.

City officials have retained ETC Institute of Olathe, Kan., to administer the survey and provide the city with statistically valid results, Tesh said. If necessary, ETC will solicit additional responses in the event that some demographic groups or geographic areas are too under-represented to provide a valid sample.

The city also conducted surveys in 2018 and 2019 with the assistance of ETC Institute. Tesh said that this year’s survey is very similar to the previous surveys and will allow the city to compare results year-over-year.
