The Winston-Salem Police Department will be honoring the following two retirees during the virtual 2021 Public Safety Black History Month Celebration on Sunday, February 21 at 6 p.m.:

Louis Sanders, Retired Assistant Chief of Police

Louis Sanders is a native of Kinston NC. He graduated from Hickory High School and attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University majoring in Business Administration, from which he graduated in 1976.

Upon graduation, he explored several entrepreneur opportunities. He decided he wanted to be a fireman but upon going to apply, he was asked to join the Winston-Salem Police Department because they needed some black officers. Mr. Sanders decided to accept the offer of becoming of one of Winston-Salem finest. He began his career at the Winston-Salem Police department in 1981, where he served for 30 years and retired as an Assistant Chief.

Mr. Saunders is a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. He is the proud father of two daughters and has six grandchildren. He likes to garden and play golf in his spare time.

Otis Belton Jr., Retired Police Captain

Otis Belton Jr. is a native of Winston-Salem. He graduated from East Forsyth High School and attended Winston-Salem State University majoring in Urban Affairs, from which he graduated in 1978.

Upon graduation, he worked for Wachovia Bank as a customer service representative. He decided he wanted to protect and serve the citizens in his community and began his career at the Winston-Salem Police Department in 1978, where he served for 30 years and retired as a Captain.

Mr. Belton is a member of Mars Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Belton is the proud father of a son and daughter and has two grandchildren. He likes reading and traveling in his spare time.
