[ARCHIVED] Youth Advisory Council Sponsoring Virtual Food Drive

The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council is sponsoring a “YAC Attacks” virtual food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina now through May 7.

The advisory council is encouraging city residents and their fellow students to make small monetary donations through their online donations site, Tinyurl.com/YACattacks. The food drive is the advisory council’s service project for the 2020-21 school year.

The advisory council is hoping to raise at least $15,000 for the food bank, said Porsche Smith, the chair of the Youth Advisory Council. “The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt a lot of families economically and has likely exacerbated youth hunger rates in our community,” Smith said. “This virtual food drive will directly support them in their battle against food insecurity.

“When people donate they will receive a thank-you message and a message that they can post on their personal social media pages to help spread the word about the campaign,” Smith said.

For the past three years the advisory council has made youth hunger the focus of its annual service projects. Businesses and organizations that would like to support the food drive as a sponsor should contact Wanda Allen-Abraha at wandaea@cityofws.org.

The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council comprises students from each high school in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County who are interested in civic engagement. Members work throughout the school year to learn about the community, engage in government, plan an annual project, participate in state-wide youth council programs and volunteer their time.
