[ARCHIVED] Forsyth Creek Week Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary March 19 - 27

The 10th annual Forsyth Creek Week will be held March 19 - 27 with a combination of new events and returning favorites to encourage everyone to get out and appreciate the beauty and importance of our local waterways. In all, this year’s Creek Week will offer more than 50 events, including activities for all ages and interests.

New events this year include a virtual, interactive abstract nature photography game, a “wetlands walk” through Long Creek Park, “plirding” – an activity that combines bird-watching with picking up trash, a clean-up of Peters Creek where it runs through Hanes Park, giveaways of livestakes kits for homeowners with eroding streambanks, a hands-on program for assessing the water quality in Salem Lake and a class on “bee hotels & habitats.”

Popular returning activities include rides along the Salem Creek greenway using Segway personal transporters, guided creek-side bird-watching walks, water-themed trivia at Foothills Brewing, a “creek crawl” hike along Bethania’s Black Walnut Bottom Creek, frog listening walks at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville, guided bike rides along local greenways and a do-it-yourself rain barrel workshop.

Also during Creek Week, all Forsyth County Public Library branches will have special Creek Week-themed activities for children, Forsyth County Cooperative Extension will host a “rain-water harvesting” class, Kernersville will hold a “planting party in the park” and Lewisville, Clemmons and Yadkin Riverkeeper will hold clean-ups to keep litter from washing into local waterways. The Great American Cleanup in Winston-Salem will be held April 2.

Most activities are free. Complete information and a calendar of all Creek Week events are posted at ForsythCreekWeek.org.

The presenting sponsor for Forsyth Creek Week is North State Environmental, a local company that specializes in stream remediation, storm water management and erosion control. Also sponsoring Creek Week are Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities, Forsyth County Soil and Water Conservation District, Green Resource LLC, Stantec, HDR Inc., Hayward Industries Inc., the Foothills Chapter of the Sierra Club, WithersRavenel, Battery Watering Technologies, Blue Stream Environmental, Hanes Geocomponents and Freese & Nichols.

In-kind support is being provided by Triad Eco Adventures, Rain Water Solutions, Foothills Brewing, Pepsi Bottling Ventures and Bookmarks.
