[ARCHIVED] “Rec & Roll” Debuts April 13 at Malloy Park

Starting this month, Recreation & Parks will hold a series of “pop-up” recreation events at six parks in Winston-Salem that normally do not host youth sports and other structured recreation activities.

The first “Rec & Roll” event will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Nelson L. Malloy Jr. Park, 2619 Bethabara Road, said Andy Szabat, a special events coordinator for Recreation & Parks.

“We want to bring recreation & leisure activities to parks that normally do not have structured activities,” Szabat said. “Our goal is to eliminate barriers that impede access to recreation programs, and also to increase awareness of the kinds of programs that we routinely offer at some of our other parks and recreation centers.”

Each Rec & Roll event will offer such activities as soccer, tennis with oversized racquets, air-powered rockets, Frisbees, jump ropes, arts & crafts and other activities suitable for ages 2 through 15.

Other Rec & Roll events dates and locations are:

  • May 11, 6 p.m., at Parkland Park, 1660 Brewer Road
  • June 8, 6 p.m., Jamison Park, 285 Meadowlark Drive
  • July 13, 6 p.m., Blum/Blanding Park, 2401 Ivy Ave.
  • July 27, 6 p.m., Hathaway Park, 301 Anita Drive
  • Aug. 10, 6 p.m., Leinbach Park, 3635 Sally Kirk Road
