All teachers and staff at the 10 schools in the East Ward will receive thank-you lunches Wednesday, May 4, as part of a school appreciation initiative organized by East Ward Council Member Annette Scippio. Each school will also receive a memorial plant and a variety of gifts to be distributed through drawings.

The schools are Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, Glenn High School, Kennedy High School, The Career Center, Carter High School, Sedge Garden Elementary School, Smith Farm Elementary School, Hall-Woodward Elementary School, The Arts Based School and Ephesus Academy.

Businesses, corporations and non-profits donated $12,100 plus $3,660 worth of gifts for the appreciation initiative, Scippio said. “Our motto in the East Ward is, ‘Unity is the heart of community.’ This is a ward-wide effort to show our collective appreciation for our educators,” she said.

“There are extreme levels of poverty in the East Ward. Many households have little or no discretionary income that would allow parents to provide thank-you gifts, and several of our East Ward schools do not have a PTA that could spearhead a teacher appreciation event.

“Our East Ward educators and staff in these 10 schools are dedicated, committed men and women who seek to bring out the best in our East Ward children. They deserve our thanks! This initiative is a wonderful example of how various entities, coming together, can have a positive impact and build community.”
