[ARCHIVED] Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for Ben Piggott Basketball Court

City residents are invited to join Mayor Allen Joines and members of the City Council at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Ben Piggott Basketball Court at the William C. Sims Sr. Community Center, 1201 Alder St., Winston-Salem.

Piggott served as the center’s director from its opening in 1991 until 2013. Among the scores of programs Piggott initiated while serving as director, he is remembered for the Peace Toys for War Toys exchange, the Learning Center, the Happy Hill Reunion and the Happy Hill Senior Citizens Club.

Over the years, Piggott’s efforts were recognized with numerous local, state and national awards, including the Winston-Salem Employee of the Year in 1992, the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1996 and the Ameritech Award for Excellence in Crime Prevention, awarded by the National Crime Prevention Council in 2000.

Piggott retired in 2016, with 31 and a half years of service to the citizens of Winston-Salem.
